UMSL senior Ashleigh King

Senior outfielder Ashleigh King (St. Louis, Mo./ Cor Jesu Academy) of the University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Softball Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

King, who owns a 4.00 cumulative grade point average, becomes the 10th UMSL student-athlete to garner CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors and the first since Katie Bartlett (softball) was a second team honoree in 2010.

The lone senior on the 2014 team, King, an education major with an emphasis in elementary education, started all 57 games in centerfield, posting a batting average of .290 with 54 hits, including 10 doubles, 22 RBIs and 37 runs scored.

A two-time Second Team All-GLVC honoree, King helped the No. 6 nationally ranked Tritons to a program-best 49-8 record and a spot in the NCAA Midwest Super Regional.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® consideration, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with a 3.30 or higher cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or an important reserve and must be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since 1952, CoSIDA has honored more than 20,000 outstanding student-athletes with this prestigious award, which became known as the Capital One Academic All-America® in 2011.
