The University of Missouri–St. Louis held its second annual Faculty Author Reception on Dec. 1 to showcase the high number of published faculty on campus. More than 50 books, CDs and journal articles were on display in the third-floor rotunda at the Millennium Student Center.

The event was initiated by Ron Yasbin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UMSL.

“The writing of a book, the composing of a musical piece, the writing of a play, etc., represent true scholarly achievements that are time consuming and demonstrate the best of our faculty,” Yasbin said. “Often these achievements go unnoticed by the university and even by colleagues. Having this type of reception brings to the forefront our faculty and some of their achievements.”

Reception attendees enjoyed refreshments and spoke with the authors, many of whom were on hand. The event included a tribute to G. David Curry, professor of criminology and criminal justice, who has announced his retirement.

“With Dave retiring at the end of this semester, it seemed a good idea to honor him for all his years of service at the reception,” Yasbin said. He added that his fellow deans across campus were enthusiastic supporters of the reception, which he described as “truly a UMSL-wide event.”
