Freshman goalkeeper Amber Hayes stopped 16 shots on the weekend, including 10 Sunday as the UMSL women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Truman State.
Volleyball
UMSL went 1-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play last week, rallying for a 3-2 victory after dropping the first two sets at Quincy on Tuesday but falling at home to third-ranked Lewis 3-1 and Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Sophomore Kylie Rudsinkski averaged 3.08 kills per set and recorded a career-best 21 in the win at Quincy, while senior Danielle Waedekin averaged 5.58 digs per set. The volleyball team (10-5, 3-4 GLVC) is at William Jewell on Tuesday and at Illinois Springfield on Friday.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons bounced back from a 1-0 double overtime loss at Quincy on Friday night to earn a 2-1 win at Truman State on Sunday. In Friday’s game, the host Hawks converted a penalty kick with 17 seconds remaining. Junior Kenan Selimovic and senior Pat Ries each scored for UMSL on Sunday. Ries’ goal was his team-leading seventh this season. The Tritons (4-4-2, 4-3-1 GLVC) will play host to William Jewell on Friday and Rockhurst on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer
UMSL suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 18 Quincy Friday night before playing 110 scoreless minutes at Truman State on Sunday in a 0-0 double overtime draw. Freshman goalkeeper Amber Hayes finished the weekend with 16 saves, including a season-best 10 at Truman State. The Tritons (2-6-2, 1-6-1 GLVC) return home on Friday to host William Jewell before welcoming Rockhurst on Sunday.
Men’s Golf
Sophomore Chris Ferris shot a career-best 215 to tie for eighth place at the Kyle Riman Memorial Invitational, hosted by Tiffin University, on Saturday and Sunday in Tiffin, Ohio. Ferris’ strong play helped UMSL to a sixth-place finish in the 21-team field. Ferris shot rounds of 72, 76 and 67, finishing five strokes out of medalist honors. His 5-under-par final round tied for the lowest round of the tournament. The Tritons turned in an 880 (296-293-291), 11 strokes behind team champion Wayne State. UMSL will host the Midwest Regional at Fox Run next Monday and Tuesday in Eureka, Missouri.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis
The Tritons tennis teams hosted NCAA Division I Saint Louis University Friday and Saturday. On the men’s side, freshman Karl Heinrichs won two singles and one doubles match. As a team, UMSL went 5-7 against the Billikens in singles and 1-2 in doubles. On the women’s side, junior Salome Bleuler and sophomore Marina Prediger picked up a doubles win. The men have completed their fall schedule, while the women will wrap up theirs by hosting a fall tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL opened its season last Friday afternoon at the Show-Me Showdown, competing against several opponents from across Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The men had two top-10 finishes with Gabo Jimenez placing 10th in the 50-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay team also placing fifth. For the women, the 400-yard freestyle relay finished 13th. The Tritons return to the pool next Friday against Truman State and Maryville in Kirksville, Missouri.
