Professor Eric Wiland gestures with his arm as he makes a point to the first-year master’s students in his graduate philosophy proseminar course last week while meeting outside in the Quad at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The topic of the course is self-knowledge, and Wiland said they were discussing an argument in a paper by philosopher Tyler Burge concerning how people can know what they’re thinking without having to gather any external evidence.
