The Saint Louis Argus honored Barbara Harbach, professor of music at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, with a Distinguished Citizen Award. Harbach received the award at The Saint Louis Argus’ 99th Anniversary and Annual Distinguished Citizen Awards Luncheon on June 25 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis.
The luncheon’s theme was “A Tribute to First Ladies.” The Saint Louis Argus recognized several women who positively impacted the St. Louis region. Honorees represented education, community organizations, churches, government, business and politics.
“Dr. Harbach’s lively performances and recordings have captured the imagination of many American composers, and the body of work written for and dedicated to Harbach is substantial,” an article in The Saint Louis Argus said. “Musical America has called her ‘nothing short of brilliant,’ and Gramophone has cited her as an ‘acknowledged interpreter – and, indeed, muse – of modern harpsichord music.’”
Harbach tours extensively as both concert organist and harpsichordist. She has performed recitals throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
As a composer, Harbach has written symphonies, works for chamber ensemble, string orchestra, organ, harpsichord, musicals, choral anthems, film scores, modern ballet and many arrangement for brass and organ of various Baroque works. She is also a prolific recording artist and researcher, as well as director of the UMSL College of Fine Arts and Communication initiative Women in the Arts.
