Summer camp to immerse students in singing

The College of Fine Arts and Communication at the University of Missouri–St. Louis announces Acappellooza Summer Camp, an a cappella music camp for students in grades 9–12. For four days, from July 16–19 students will be immersed in singing led by some of the world’s most prominent names in a cappella music, including members of the internationally famous Ambassadors of Harmony and Jim Henry, director of choral studies at UMSL.

Women’s semipro basketball team St. Louis Surge to open season at UMSL

Women’s semipro basketball team St. Louis Surge to open season at UMSL

For the St. Louis Surge’s 2013 season, the women’s semiprofessional basketball team will call the University of Missouri–St. Louis home. The Surge will kick off its season with a home opener, taking on the Atlanta Tarheels. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. May 4 in the Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center at UMSL.

Organizers are expecting up to 1,000 art and rare book collectors to pack this year’s St. Louis Mercantile Library Fine Print, Rare Book and Paper Arts Fair at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The number of dealers has increased to 25 this year and includes a fine-art gallery in Chesterfield.

Tegan Klevorn refuses to think about bad weather, even though it’s St. Louis and April brings showers and an occasional tornado. As coordinator of student activities, Klevorn oversees Mirthday, the annual student carnival and spring celebration held outdoors at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Just as the name implies – Mirthday is for frivolity, especially if it involves laughter.

Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival celebrates 10 years

Over the last ten years, the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival has grown to be one of the most significant jazz festivals in the Midwest. Produced by the University of Missouri–St. Louis, the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center and Jazz St. Louis, the 2013 festival will run April 18-20 and feature Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, Doc Severinsen and His Big Band and Anat Cohen and Matt Wilson.

Acclaimed scholars to examine validity of American exceptionalism

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and its Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice host the AE21: American Exceptionalism in the 21st Century conference, April 25-26 at UMSL’s J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center. Presentations and discussions examine the contemporary relevance and validity of the exceptionalism thesis as applied to a variety of institutions in the United States and other developed nations.

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, along with the Des Lee Collaborative Vision and College of Arts and Sciences, will present the 12th Annual Youth Violence Prevention Conference. Optometrists to meet for Nutrition and the Eye Symposium VI

The College of Optometry at the University of Missouri–St. Louis announces the Nutrition and the Eye Symposium VI, a continuing studies program taking place on April 13-14 at UMSL’s J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center. Optometrists will gather to explore research and findings of nutritional values that will increase longevity prospects, prevent, and even cure degenerative ocular diseases.

PPRC photo exhibit focuses on DEAF Inc.

A multi-generational group of people with ties to the Deaf Empowerment Awareness Foundation are both the subjects and photographers for a new University of Missouri–St. Louis exhibit. Participants included St. Louis-area deaf and hard-of-hearing people, American Sign Language interpreters and teachers who work with deaf students. Their photos result in an exhibit that is the latest in the Public Policy Research Center Photography Project series.

Every time The Second City touring company returns to the University of Missouri–St. Louis for its extremely popular annual show at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, a future legend could be onstage. Named the country’s “Comedy Empire” by The New York Times, the Chicago-based improv group has a reputation for cultivating the next generation of comedic royalty with alumni including Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Steven Colbert.
