Hello my name is Kat Mierek I’m a senior in IS at UMSL. I’m graduating in December. I’m really excited to be going to Grace Hopper. As a non-traditional student it means so much to me to go to an event that celebrates women like me. I was the kid that got in trouble for taking the VCR (that’s right I said VCR…) apart not once but twice. Didn’t get the first one back together back when they cost an arm and a leg and half a dog. I got the second one back together and my dad was none the wiser. Even though I loved technology and tapping away on the Commodore 64 back when I could swing my legs without them touching the ground in an office chair it seemed like all through school my teachers pushed me towards right brained subjects while my male counterparts got pressed towards engineering and math. I may have taken a circuitous route to get to Grace Hopper but I could not be more grateful to the people that made it possible. Thank you so much to the generosity of our sponsors. One of the things I am most patient about is making sure everyone has the opportunity to be exposed to STEAM education.
