Women’s Basketball
UMSL picked up a 79-73 overtime win at Great Lakes Valley Conference rival McKendree last Thursday night with a stellar performance from junior Alex LaPorta, who finished with 37 points and 16 rebounds. The Tritons then lost a 64-54 decision at Southern Indiana on Saturday. UMSL (12-13, 7-9 GLVC) plays its next four games at home, beginning this weekend with William Jewell and Rockhurst on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Men’s Basketball
The 20th-ranked Tritons snapped a two-game losing streak last Thursday night with a 68-65 win at McKendree but lost a 67-66 decision at Southern Indiana on Saturday as the Screaming Eagles rallied back from a 10-point deficit with five minutes to play. Senior Jalen Wilkins-McCoy averaged 15.5 points for the week while shooting 61.9 percent from the field. Junior Yaakema Rose Jr. added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists per game. UMSL (21-5, 12-4) begins a four-game homestand that will close out the regular season on Thursday when it plays host to William Jewell. The Tritons then welcome Rockhurst on Saturday.
Softball
The Tritons went 2-2 at last weekend’s Alvy Early Memorial Classic in Bentonville, Ark., defeating Pittsburg State 6-3 and Arkansas Monticello 8-4 on Sunday. Redshirt senior Morgan Hill recorded seven hits and three RBI while sophomore Corinne Daley tallied a pair of home runs. UMSL (3-5) returns to the field February 28-March 1 at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kan.
Baseball
UMSL went 2-1 in the MIAA/GLVC Crossover, defeating Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foes Missouri Western 6-2 and Northwest Missouri State 8-1 with a loss to Missouri Southern in between on the season’s opening weekend in Joplin, Missouri. Sophomore Brandon Olion batted .636, recording seven hits on the weekend while senior Bobby Shallenberger and sophomore Holden Mayberry picked up wins on the mound. UMSL (2-1) is at Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday in a doubleheader before a four-game series at Spring Hill over the weekend.
Women’s Swimming
UMSL swam to a seventh-place finish at the GLVC Championships last week, breaking eight school records at the event. Freshman Zara Konstapel placed seventh in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke races.
Men’s Swimming
UMSL placed sixth at the GLVC Championships last week, breaking eight school records and recording eight NCAA DII B-cuts. Freshman Guillem Masjuan Roca had the top finish with a fourth-place showing in the 200 backstroke, breaking the school record with a B-cut time of 1 minute, 47.57 seconds.
