NPR turned to Rachel Winograd, who holds a dual appointment as an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences and director of the Missouri Institute of Mental Health, to comment on the current status of the fentanyl pipeline into the United States. Some top drug policy analysts in the U.S., as well as experts with close ties to street fentanyl markets, believe the data shows a major disruption in the deadly fentanyl supply chain. However, Winograd believes that factors such as better addiction treatment and the spread of the drug overdose reversal medication naloxone are more responsible for Missouri’s drop in drug-related deaths. Winograd also commented on the issue in the New York Times. She noted that overdose deaths among Black men in the state fell in 2023 for the first time in many years.
Erika Gibb, professor of physics and astronomy, spoke with National Geographic about comet C/2023 A3, a rare celestial passerby that many astronomers are hailing as the comet of the century. What makes this comet unique is how apparent it will be in the sky. “Most comets don’t normally get bright enough for someone to see with the naked eye,” she told the publication.
