Syn-Aulois will perform at 8 p.m. on March 10 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

For much of the 1920s, Greece was in political turmoil. During that time a type of Greek blues music called rembetika started to flourish among the urban underground types.

Boston-based ensemble Syn-Aulois will perform the bluesy, heartrending music when it takes to the stage March 10 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. Their show “Syn-Aulois: Rembetika to Modern” will start at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:10 p.m. for a pre-show discussion.

Syn-Aulois will perform a wide range of 20th century Greek art music, rembetika, and contemporary popular music.

The three musicians who make up the group come from a rich variety of musical backgrounds, including jazz, classical music, avant-garde, rock and Latin. Panayota Haloulakou will lead the group with her extraordinary vocals.

Tickets start at $16. To enhance the atmosphere, cabaret seating will be offered in the intimate E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater. Tickets for cabaret seating range from $46 to $92.

The concert is sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Global Ethnic Collaborative and Karakas Family Foundation Alliance for the Advancement of Hellenic Studies, Hellenic Government-Karakas Family Foundation Professorship in Greek Studies, International Studies and Programs at UMSL and the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, with the support of The Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis.
