Location: SSB 118

Description: It is now understood by most world powers that future wars will all take place in part in cyberspace. It is also widely agreed that most of the cyber warfare technology that will be used will have descended from the research facilities of the United States and its western allies. What is not as obvious is who the ultimate victors will be. One of life’s ironies is the countries that lead the way in developing cyber-technology are not the ones that are taking best advantage from it. Hal Berghel, professor of computer science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and founding director of the Identity Theft and Financial Fraud Research and Operations Center, will share his experience on cyber warfare from both technical and cultural perspectives.

Archaeology of the Classical World
Date/Time: April 25, 2012 7:00 PM
Location: MSC Century Room A
Audience: Open
Description: In this lecture, Prof. Vassilis Lambrinoudakis discusses the many ways in which the legacy of Classical Greece is affecting our world, especially in terms of its usefulness, dynamics, and even misuse. Major themes of the lecture include: 1) our ability to analyze Classical Greece in an objective manner; 2) the manners in which our educational programs use Classical Greece; 3) the authenticity of modern restoration of Classical monuments; 4) the ways we create modern versions of historical “reality” to articulate our own experiences and define our social, national or cultural identities; and 5) our use of Classical Greece in literature, visual arts, architecture, theatre and film production, and athletics. What is apparent in all these areas is that perceptions of Classical Greece, even when sometimes misused, remain vividly alive and creative in the international community.
