Top musicians at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will battle it out during the final round of the Fifth Annual Concerto Competition Nov. 16 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center.
The finalists include Earl Kovacs, clarinet; Martin Laufhutte, violoncello; Rachel Petzoldt, flute; Ashley Dickson, violin; Benjamin Dickson, viola; Elisabeth Oar, violoncello; Dustin Shrum, trumpet; Robert Carpenter, piano; Thomas Winkler, piano; Jessica Winkle, flute; Corey Axelson, marimba; and Brandon Smith, baritone.
The students will perform works by several composers, including Dvorak, Bartok, Handel and Mozart.
The winner of the competition will be chosen by judges Ilia Radoslavov, assistant professor of music, piano at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., and Christine Armistead, voice teacher at Washington University in St. Louis. The students are competing for an opportunity to perform a solo with one of UMSL’s premier ensembles.
The judged competition will start at 3 p.m. in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater. It is sponsored by the Department of Music at UMSL. The concert is free and open to the public.
