UMSL seniors Devonna Smith (left) and Hazaria Washington made All-GLVC teams following one of the women’s basketball program’s best seasons to date.
Senior Devonna Smith of the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s basketball team has been named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Team, while senior Hazaria Washington has been tabbed to the All-GLVC Second Team.
Smith, who is majoring in social work and criminology and criminal justice, earned first-team accolades for the second straight year, while Washington is a first-time honoree.
Smith averaged 12.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the UMSL Tritons, while shooting 53.4 percent from the field. In GLVC-only contests, she averaged 12.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, which ranked third in the league. She has tallied 11 double-doubles this season.
A three-year starter for UMSL, Smith will graduate second all-time in career rebounds with 726. She also ranks fifth in career blocked shots (52), eighth in field goals made (398), ninth in field goal percentage (.492) and ninth in free throws made (224). Smith is the 13th player in program history to score at least 1,000 career points.
Washington, who is majoring in communication, led the team with 13.3 points per game and also owned team-highs of 57 steals and 18 blocks. She shot 52 percent from the field and averaged 7.0 rebounds per game. In GLVC-only contests, Washington averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game, which ranked fifth. She has tallied seven double-doubles this season.
A two-year starter, Washington ranks seventh all-time in career blocked shots with 42.
The duo has helped UMSL to one of its best seasons in program history. The Tritons finished with a 21-8 record, one victory shy of the program-best of 22 set in 1980-81. UMSL posted a 13-5 GLVC mark, finishing third in the West Division and tied for fourth overall with UIndy.
