Emboldened by the historic sprit of African music with the perspective of American protest songs, Chiwoniso writes and sings brilliantly reflective and entrancing compositions. Experience “Chiwoniso: Rebel Woman” at 8 p.m. Feb. 26 in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. A pre-show discussion will take place at 7:10 p.m. Tickets are $18.

The American-born Chiwoniso grew up immersed in the music of her parents’ native Zimbabwe. As a teen, she lived among the Shona tribe in Africa and embraced the country’s music as her life’s work.

This performance is sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Global Ethnic Collaborative and E. Desmond Lee Professorship in African American Studies, the Center for International Studies at UMSL, UMSL and the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.
