Midwest Madness Comedy Show Tickets on Sale Now

Description: Get over that mid-week hump at the Midwest Madness Comedy Show, September 14! St. Louis’ own B-Phlat, Detroit’s Tony Roberts and Chicago’s Damon Williams will have you laughing for days. Advance tickets are $7 for students and $10 for faculty and staff. Both groups must present their UMSL ID and may purchase a maximum of two tickets at the discount. This event is open to the public; advance tickets are $15. All ticket prices will change the day of the event. The show is a reserved-seating event.

Richard D. Schwartz Observatory Open House

Manners and Mischief: Gender Power and Etiquette in Japan

Description: Laura Miller, the Ei’ichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Endowed Professor of Japanese Studies and Professor of Anthropology at UMSL, will present “Behavior which offends: Comics and other images of incivility.” Miller is the co-editor of the book “Manners and Mischief: Gender, Power and Etiquette in Japan.” Offering a concise snapshot of Japanese society, “Manners and Mischief” examines etiquette guides, advice literature, and other instructions for behavior from the early modern period to present day, and discovers how manners do in fact make the nation. Eleven essays consider a spectrum of cases, from the geisha party to gay-bar cool, executive grooming, and good manners for subway travel. Together, they demonstrate that etiquette is more than fussy rules for behavior. In fact, the idiom of manners, packaged in conduct literature, reveals much about gender and class difference, notions of national identity, the dynamics of subversion and conformity, and more.
