Women’s Golf
The 19th-ranked University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golf team finished as the runner-up at the Great Lakes Vally Conference Championship, which concluded Sunday at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois. The Tritons fell to Indianapolis in the Sunday afternoon championship duel after losing three of the five head-to-head matches. UMSL had earned the top seed in match play after posting a combined score of 914 to beat the second-place Greyhounds by 13 shots during the stroke play portion of the tournament, which ended Saturday. The Tritons had three golfers finish in the top seven and six in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard with Wilma Zanderau finishing as the runner-up with a 54-hole score of 223, three back of UIndy’s Caroline Whallon. Mayan Covarrubias took fifth at 229, and Hillary Currier finished seventh with a score of 231. Emmy Wahl tied for 13th at 236, Brooke Inchiostro finished 15th with a score of 237 while competing as an individual, and Juliette Lecomte came in 16th at 238. UMSL beat Illinois Springfield 4-1 in Sunday morning’s semifinal match with Zanderau, Covarrubias, Wall and Inchiostro each picking up individual wins. Zanderau and Currier picked up The Tritons’ two match wins in the final. UMSL is bound for the NCAA’s East Regional, which will be played beginning May 5 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Michigan.
Men’s Golf
The Tritons are headed to their 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament after earning an invitation as one of 20 teams competing in the Midwest/Central Regional May 8-10 at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Missouri. UMSL will be making its 19th postseason appearance overall and 13th in the past 14 years after finishing first in the stroke-play portion of last week’s GLVC Tournament, which concluded Tuesday at Silo Ridge Golf Club in Bolivar, Missouri. The Tritons finished with a team total of 864 – including back-to-back rounds of 281 – to beat runner-up Missouri S&T by seven shots in stroke play. Five UMSL golfers finished among the top 20 individuals with Trigg Lindahl tying for third with a total of 214, Logan Mayo tying for sixth with score of 216, Dani Solavera tying for 12th at 219, Benjamin Berger tying for 14th at 220 and Leo Baudry tying for 19th at 221. Lewis’ Cody Donovan won the individual title with a score of 210. The Tritons couldn’t keep up their strong play in match play, losing to Indianapolis 4-1 in the semifinal with Lindahl earning the team’s only victory. The Greyhounds fell to Missouri S&T in the final. The Tritons and Miners will represent the GLVC in the Midwest Region with the Tritons holding the fourth overall seed.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL clinched a spot in the GLVC Championship by knocking off Maryville 4-3 in Saturday’s regular-season finale at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. The Tritons took the doubles point after wins by Hannah Tse and Aleksandra Lopez at No. 1 and Anna Favaron and Morgan Lint at No. 2. Five of the six singles matches were settled in three sets, but Tse, Lopez and Lint each pulled out singles wins – Lopez in straight sets – help UMSL come out on top in the dual meet. Lint clinched the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Grace Brown at No. 4 singles. Tse was a 6-0, 6-7 (2), 6-0 winner over Nazli Saka at No. 1 singles, and Lopez topped Victoria Lisson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. UMSL (10-6,. 3-2 GLVC) will meet Drury in the first round of the GLVC Championship on Friday in Springfield, Illinois.
Men’s Tennis
The Tritons improved to 4-1 in conference play after beating Maryville 5-2 in a dual meet Saturday as they closed out their regular-season schedule at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. UMSL won two of three doubles matches – with victories by Tanin Ramnath and Percy Siercke at No. 1 and Alejandro Ley and Daniel Berdecio at No. 2. Ley, Berdecio, Henry Roberts and Joan Garros each won their singles matches against the Saints with Ley pulling out a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 win over Jose Hernandez at No. 1. The Tritons (11-7, 4-1 GLVC) had already clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament and will take on Quincy in a first-round dual on Friday in Springfield, Illinois.
Baseball
UMSL lost 10-0 to NCAA Division I foe Lindenwood in its only game of the week, which was played last Tuesday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Missouri. The Tritons managed only three hits in the loss, and they came courtesy of Braedon Stoakes, Barrett Rose and Mitch Bonczkowski. Tanner Simpson had two of the Lions’ nine hits and drove in four runs. UMSL (25-21, 14-14 GLVC) will wrap up its regular season with a four-game series against Maryville beginning Thursday at the UMSL Baseball Field.
Softball
The Tritons went 2-4 in their final week of the season, getting swept in a nonconference doubleheader against Missouri Western on Tuesday before splitting weekend conference series against William Jewell and Truman State. UMSL got outscored 8-3 combined in Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Griffins, including a 3-0 shutout loss in the opener. The Tritons took Game 1 of Saturday’s series against the Cardinals in Liberty, Missouri, winning 7-5 in nine innings with Simia Spahiev scoring on an error to snap a 5-all tie and Phoebe Miller providing some insurance with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly. William Jewell blanked UMSL 6-0 in Game 2 with Hannah Tomlianovich providing the Tritons’ lone hit. Tomlianovich, May Pasqualini and Rylie Buchanan each had two hits in UMSL’ 11-5 loss to Truman State on Sunday in Kirksville, Missouri, and Buchanan also scored two runs. Coach Chelsea Mulligan‘s team closed out its regular season with an 8-6 win over the Bulldogs as Gwyn Miller delivered two hits and drove in three runs. The Tritons ended their season 19-26, including 12-16 in GLVC play.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
UMSL’s track and field teams had four individuals set personal records and three others hit season-best marks or times as they competed at the Millikin Big Blue Friday Night Invite in Decartur, Illinois, in the Tritons’ final tune-up before next weekend’s GLVC Championships. Toby Middleton won the men’s 1,500 with a season-best time of 3 minutes, 57.12 seconds. Teammates William Kaempfe and Benjamin VandenBrink finished right behind him in second and third, respectively. Emmett Johnson and Sebastian Meyer each placed in the top five in the men’s 5,000. Johnson was the runner-up in a time of 15:35.10, and Meyer was fifth in 15:56.03. On the women’s side, Zoey Losch ran a season-best time of 24:00.84 to place third in the 5,000, and Bridget Ragan and Ansley Casey were second and fifth, respectively, in the women’s 800 with the former posting a time of 2:30.12. Melissa White had a season-best mark of 33 feet, 8 inches in the triple while Rebekah Vail placed fifth in the hammer throw (102-0) and sixth in the discuss (89-3). The GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will begin Thursday and run through Saturday at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Illinois.
