"Founding St. Louis: First City of the New West" was written by J. Frederick Fausz, associate professor of history at UMSL.

J. Frederick Fausz, associate professor of history at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, offers a fresh interpretation of Gateway City’s French roots in his new book “Founding St. Louis: First City of the New West.” Fausz will be on hand at 7 p.m. Thursday (July 21) at Left Bank Books’ Downtown store, 321 N. 10th St. in St. Louis.

Fausz will make a brief presentation, discuss a few rare artifacts on display, answer questions and then sign books.

The History Press released “Founding St. Louis” this spring. The book explores the 250-year-old mystery of why and how French St. Louis was founded. It offers new insight into the roles of St. Louis pioneers such as Pierre Laclede, the early Chouteaus, Saint Ange de Bellerive and the Osage Indians.

Fausz is an expert on American Indians, colonial America, early America fur trades and 18th century St. Louis.
