Dora B. Schriro, the only official in the country to have led four departments of corrections, will deliver the keynote address at the 21st Century Leadership Academy awards dinner presented by the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. May 27 at the Saint Louis Woman’s Club, 4600 Lindell Blvd. in St. Louis. Tickets cost $37 to $100.
Schriro, a nationally recognized innovator of re-entry, is the commissioner of the New York Department of Correction’s where she oversees the city’s 13,500 inmate population. Prior to assuming this role in September, she served as special advisor to Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano on Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Detention and Removal, and director of the Office of Detention Policy and Planning for the department. Schriro previously served as directors of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Missouri Department of Corrections and St. Louis Department of Corrections. She was the first woman to hold the statewide post in Missouri and Arizona.
As part of the event, Kelly Newsome McNichols, a consultant at Church Development, a capital consulting firm in Kansas City, Mo., will receive the Amethyst Award which is presented annually to a Sue Shear Institute Fellow who has distinguished herself by applying skills gained through the academy. The academy is a weeklong residential program for Missouri college students designed to stimulate interest and participation in public policy. More than 350 Fellows have completed the academy, which is held annually at UMSL.
The Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life is a nonpartisan educational program founded in 1996 to assist women in developing the interest and skills necessary to succeed as full participants in public policy. The institute has offices at UMSL and University of Missouri–Kansas City.
