The events in Ferguson, Mo., last year affected more than just that community. The entire St. Louis Region and beyond was impacted by the tragic death of Michael Brown and the unrest that followed.

socialjusticeOver the last year of healing, many have expressed feelings through art, photos and stories. Members of the University of Missouri–St. Louis will reflect on the events with music.

“Composers for Social Justice,” a concert sponsored by UMSL’s Department of Music in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL. The concert is free and open to the public.

University Orchestra led by James Richards, interim dean of the college, and University Singers led by Jim Henry, chair of music, will perform compositions by Beethoven, George Walker and others reflecting social justice themes. The concert will also feature the premiere of Curators’ Professor of Music Barbara Harbach’s “Symphony for Ferguson.” Jacqueline Thompson, assistant professor of theater, will narrate the concert.

Richards and Harbach were featured on STL Live and St. Louis Public Radio discussing the upcoming concert.
