UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The 23rd-ranked men's basketball team knocked off Drury and Southwest Baptist on the road last week to run its winning streak to 13 games.

Jose Grubbs and the 23rd-ranked men’s basketball team won at Drury last Thursday night, snapping a 12-game losing streak against the Panthers. The Tritons followed that up with a win at Southwest Baptist to improve to 14-1, including 5-0 in GLVC play.

Men’s Basketball
No. 23 UMSL kept its Great Lakes Valley Conference mark unblemished while moving its winning streak to 13 games with victories at Drury (72-70) and Southwest Baptist (84-68). Junior Yaakema Rose Jr. averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists for the week and scored a game and career-high 26 points in the win at Drury. Redshirt senior Jason Towery added 18.0 points per game and went a combined 10 for 20 from 3-point range. UMSL (14-1, 5-0) travels to No. 1 Bellarmine on Thursday before hosting No. 16 Indianapolis on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball
The Tritons suffered road losses at No. 1 Drury (91-58) and Southwest Baptist (80-68 in OT) last weekend despite a stellar offensive performance from redshirt senior Laura Szorenyi. She averaged 22.5 points while shooting 56 percent from the field and added 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Szorenyi also made all 11 free throws she attempted. UMSL (6-8, 1-4 GLVC) travels to Bellarmine on Thursday before hosting Indianapolis on Saturday.

Men’s Swimming
No. 22 UMSL picked up three wins and also recorded five runner-up finishes in its first competition in 2020,  placing second among five teams at the WashU Invite. Freshman Guillem Masjuan Roca won the 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay and the runner-up 200 medley relay. The Tritons are next scheduled to swim January 24-25 in a triangular against McKendree and Bellarmine.

Women’s Swimming
The Tritons were back in the pool for the first time in three weeks last Friday, competing at the WashU Invite. Freshman Zara Konstapel led the Tritons with a runner-up showing in the 100 breaststroke. The 200 freestyle relay team placed fourth, as did freshman Franziska Hauptmann in the 100 backstroke. UMSL is next scheduled to swim January 24-25 in a triangular against McKendree and Bellarmine.
