Media Coverage: January 2013

The University of Missouri–St. Louis makes a significant impact on the St. Louis area. Stories about the university, its scholars and their expertise are often covered by local and national news media.

Media Coverage highlights some of the top coverage, but does not serve as a comprehensive listing. This post will be updated with new highlights throughout the month and beyond.

Teresa Balestreri, director of career services, was quoted Jan. 24 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “Assessment tests offer students direction in choosing careers.”

Lawrence Barton, professor emeritus of chemistry, was quoted Jan. 31 in the St. Louis Beacon article “At age 50, UMSL looks back and ahead.”

Berit Brogaard, professor of philosophy, was interviewed about synesthesia for the Jan. 24 episode of “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU. Brogaard wrote the Jan. 24 Psychology Today article “Whatever happened to the debate about aspirin and Reye’s?”

Alan Byrd, dean of enrollment services, was quoted Jan. 24 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “Visiting colleges crucial before making decision.”

The Dickson String Quartet, composed of UMSL Pierre Laclede Honors College students Ashley, Brandon, Benjamin and Daniel Dickson, were interviewed Jan. 18 on the St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU program “Cityscape.”

J. Frederick Fausz, associate professor of history, was quoted throughout the article “Louis, Louis, Loo-ey: Recovering memories of St. Louis’ French heritage,” which ran in the January issue of St. Louis Magazine.

Chancellor Tom George was quoted Jan. 15 in the St. Louis Business Journal article “UMSL and World Trade Center partner for online education for international trade certificate.” George was interviewed about UMSL’s Jubilee and higher education trends Jan. 23 on “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU. He was quoted Jan. 31 in The St. Louis American article “Access and excellence at UMSL.” George was quoted Jan. 31 in the St. Louis Beacon article “At age 50, UMSL looks back and ahead.”

Alumnus Douglas Harms, MPPA 1982, was featured Jan. 4 in the Webster-Kirkwood (Mo.) Times article “Harms, Kurila given UMSL distinguished alumni award.”  

Dan Isom, the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Policing and the Community, was featured in the January St. Louis Magazine article “St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom bids adieu.”

Terry Jones, professor of political science, provided analysis of Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s State of the State address and upcoming legislative session on the Jan. 29 episode of “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU. Jones discussed Missouri lawmakers in 2013 on the Jan. 7 episode of “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio.

David Klinger, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice, was quoted Jan. 17 in the Associated Press article “Suspect in St. Louis school shooting had warrant,” which scores of media outlets throughout the country published.

Alumna Elizabeth Kurila, MPPA 2002, as featured Jan. 4 in the Webster-Kirkwood (Mo.) Times article “Harms, Kurila given UMSL distinguished alumni award.”

Haim Mano, associate professor of marketing, was quoted Jan. 15 in the St. Louis Business Journal article “Panera’s ‘hidden menu’ comes alive on social media.”

Kristian Marlow, a student pursuing a master’s degree in philosophy, was interviewed about synesthesia for the Jan. 24 episode of “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU. He wrote the Jan. 25 Psychology Today article “What’s this thing called ‘synesthesia’?

Shirley Martin, dean emeritus of the College of Nursing, was quoted Jan. 31 in the St. Louis Beacon article “At age 50, UMSL looks back and ahead.”

Alumnus Lawrence Miskel, BA political science 2001, BA German 2001 and MPPA 2006, was featured Jan. 17 in the Webster Groves (Mo.) Patch article “Webster Groves will be represented in President Obama’s inaugural parade.”

Kathleen Butterly Nigro, associate teaching professor of English, was quoted Jan. 6 in The Korea Times (Seoul) article “‘Madam is more appropriate.’”

Briona Perry, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry and Pierre Laclede Honors College student, was featured Jan. 31 in The St. Louis American article “Access and excellence at UMSL.”

Dave Robertson, Curators’ Teaching Professor of Political Science, was quoted Jan. 21 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “Inauguration on MLK Day to be a convergence of a ‘hope’ and a ‘dream.’” Robertson was interviewed for the Jan. 25 Truthloader (London) article “How fascists plotted to overthrow the US government.” He was quoted Jan. 4 in the St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU story “Political spending ‘arms race’ makes it a good year for TV stations.” Robertson was quoted Jan. 7 in the St. Louis Public Radio story “Nixon, Mo. lawmakers, ready for 2013 legislative session.” He was quoted Jan. 9 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “Ed Martin’s GOP takeover could signal continued rightward shift.”

J. Martin Rochester, Curators’ Teaching Professor of Political Science, wrote the Jan. 23 St. Louis Jewish Light article “Reform parents learn to adapt after son embraces Orthodox Judaism.”

Richard Rosenfeld, Curators’ Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, was quoted Jan. 16 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “St. Louis city, county police report overall crime down in 2012.” Rosenfeld was quoted Jan. 16 in the KMOX (1120 AM) story “Dotson: St. Louis crime drops 12.4 percent in 2012.” He was interviewed about St. Louis crime statistics for the Jan. 22 episode of “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU.

Steven Rowan, professor of history, was quoted Jan. 4 in The Kansas City (Mo.) Star article “Early Western maps traced ‘thoughts of God.’

John-Mark Scott, a freshman majoring in accounting and Pierre Laclede Honors College student, was featured Jan. 31 in The St. Louis American article “Access and excellence at UMSL.”

Wally Siewert, director of the Center for Ethics in Public Life, was quoted Jan. 13 in the Detroit Free Press article “Wayne County short on cash, but not on appointees.”

Kenneth Thomas, associate professor of political science, wrote the Jan. 14 Business Insider article “This is an insane time to consider cutting Social Security.”  Thomas was quoted in the article “States double down on incentives to woo companies,” which ran in the January issue of Governing. He was quoted Jan. 29 in the Columbia Journalism Review article “Praise, and criticism, for an NYT series on corporate welfare.” Thomas wrote the Jan. 30 Business Insider commentary “America wastes billions of dollars paying companies to move between states.”

Erin Tinker, a senior majoring in psychology, was featured Jan. 31 in The St. Louis American article “Access and excellence at UMSL.”

Chancellor Emeritus Blanche Touhill was quoted Jan. 31 in the St. Louis Beacon article “At age 50, UMSL looks back and ahead.”

Ron Yasbin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was quoted Jan. 24 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article “Exploratory classes broaden college students’ knowledge.”

Lara Zwarun, associate professor of communication, was quoted Jan. 22 in The Korea Times (Seoul, South Korea) article “Don’t be duped by tricky statistics.”
