St. Louis Magazine featured Innovation Week in St. Louis. Mike Seper, the director of innovation and intellectual property at UMSL, developed the celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation, complete with hackathon, innovation symposium and student showcase. “It’s focused on early stage innovators and helping aspiring entrepreneurs be able to launch new ventures, new products, bring something to the market, employ new people in our region, and be able to upskill for workforce development,” Seper said. “We want to focus on education, helping people learn emerging technologies, AI, to empower them to start building.”
The St. Louis American profiled Paula Knight, superintendent of the Jennings School District and an UMSL education alum. Since taking over the district in 2021, Knight has expanded its pre-K program to include 3-year-olds and pushed opportunities for students to earn college credits and travel internationally. In recognition of this work, Knight will receive the Stellar Performance Award during the St. Louis American Foundation’s 39th annual Salute to Excellence in Education Scholarship & Awards Gala on Oct. 17.
Maureen Quigley, teaching professor of ancient and medieval art, discussed her new card game, Dissolution, on St. Louis Public Radio’s “St. Louis on the Air.” The game is aimed at helping players understand King Henry VII’s dissolution of monasteries in Britain and the aftermath of such a sweeping decree. With Dissolution, Quigley is experimenting with cooperative mechanics that lead toward an unexpected and irreversible ending.
