The St. Louis American profiled Cierra Wourman, who earned her EdD in educational practice at UMSL. Wourman is a college and career counselor for Confluence Preparatory Academies in St. Louis and has dedicated herself to helping high school students achieve their potential. In recognition of her efforts, the St. Louis American Foundation celebrated her as an Excellence in Education honoree during its 39th annual Salute to Excellence in Education Scholarship & Awards Gala at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel.

The St. Louis Business Journal and St. Louis Post-Dispatch carried news of the UMSL Geospatial Collaborative‘s appointment of Supria Sarkar as research scientist with the institution. Sarkar will help the collaborative expand its research activities. Her position was funded through a two-year grant from Taylor Geospatial, a St. Louis-based nonprofit organization working to advance geospatial artificial intelligence – or GeoAI – and satellite data analysis for global public benefit, while increasing innovation capacity in the St. Louis region. She began her new role on Sept. 1.

With election day approaching, ABC News turned to David Kimball, professor of political science at UMSL, to help explain ranked choice voting. Voters in Alaska and Maine will use the system to rank their candidates in order of preference, first, second third, etc. If no candidate gets a majority of No. 1 rankings, votes are transferred from the candidate with the least top rankings to the other candidates based on who was ranked second, third and so on. Kimball studies ranked choice voting, and he said candidates have changed their campaign tactics to shore up those no. 2 and no. 3 rankings.
