A dozen high school students from Oakville High School (St. Louis County) took to the field – or the TelePresence Room – at the University of Missouri–St. Louis on Tuesday to battle against their Kansas City, Mo., counterparts in the annual Financial Football Show-Me Showdown.

The longstanding “I-70 rivalry” between Missouri’s two largest cities was expanded with an NFL-themed video game. Financial Football Show-Me Showdown, hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education at UMSL, pitted Oakville students led by St. Louis Rams tackle Adam Goldberg against students from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in Kansas City, led by former Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Mark Vlasic. The virtual showdown tested their financial knowledge. The teams played three games, with the KC students taking the best two out of three.

Grant Black, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education at UMSL, said the event is geared toward promoting financial education.

“It’s not about winning or losing, but about allowing students to test their financial knowledge,” Black said. “Our students dominated in many parts of the games and answered a number of questions, showed their strong financial knowledge.”

Financial Football is a fast-paced, educational video game developed by Visa to creatively test students’ money management skills. During the interactive game, each team of students answers financial questions that allow them to move down a simulated football field and score touchdowns.
