University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball senior forward Aareon Smith has been named to the Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Men’s Basketball All-Midwest Region Second Team.
Smith, a First Team All-GLVC honoree, led the UMSL Tritons with 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, which ranked 20th in NCAA DII. He posted a GLVC-best 15 double-doubles, which ranked 11th in NCAA DII. Smith also ranks seventh nationally in free throw attempts (241) and ninth in free throws made (197).
The business administration major‘s 529 total points this season are 10th on the single season charts and are the most by an UMSL player since Jonathan Griffin scored 538 during the 2004-05 season. Smith scored a career-high and GLVC second-best 38 points at Truman State on February 21, which included his 1,000th career point. His 197 free throws made are third on the single season charts, while his 241 free throws attempted are third most. Smith also etched his name on the single season charts with 285 rebounds, which ranks sixth.
He graduates with 1,569 career points, which ranks 13th in program history. Smith’s other career rankings include: free throws made (370, 4th), free throws attempted (482, 5th), free throw percentage (76.7, 9th) and rebounds (651, 9th).
The Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association all-region teams are nominated and voted on by sports information directors from schools in the respective regions. It is sponsored by Daktronics and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and focuses on awarding outstanding performances by student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level.
