Earl Swift’s original plan for college called for a brief stay at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, followed by a transfer to the University of Missouri–Columbia to enroll in its famed Missouri School of Journalism.
The end came swiftly. Swish! The University of Missouri–St. Louis Tritons men’s basketball team closed its most successful season in 21 years with a 72-70 loss at the hands of Northern Kentucky University (Highland Heights).

The hits just keep on coming for the University of Missouri–St. Louis. On the heels of UMSL’s recording-setting 10 awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in January comes news that University Marketing and Communications has garnered additional honors. Competing against the likes of DePaul University in Chicago, Syracuse University in New York, Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., and other major institutions, UMSL received five awards for its creative work in the 27th annual Educational Advertising Awards competition.

Competing against the likes of the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Missouri–Columbia, Saint Louis University and other major universities, the University of Missouri–St. Louis was honored with a record number of awards for creative excellence by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District VI. The university’s Office of Marketing and Communications received 10 awards for its 2011 creative work.
CASE District VI recognized UMSL’s work in writing, graphic design, media relations, advertising, digital media and video production. The awards were announced Jan. 10 at the district’s annual conference in Denver.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis Department of Music will present its annual Holiday Jazz Concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.

Barbara Harbach, professor of music at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will be honored Dec. 1 by the YWCA of Metropolitan St. Louis as a 2011 YWCA Leader of Distinction.
Each year, YWCA Metro St. Louis recognizes up to 10 extraordinary women for their special contributions to business, politics, education, science and technology, the arts, the professions and racial justice in St. Louis. These Leaders of Distinction are recognized at the YWCA Leader Lunch in December each year.
Emerging Leader Program Mentor Applications Available

Description: Emerging Leaders is a unique opportunity for UMSL students to get on the fast track to student leadership and campus and community involvement. Students participating in the Emerging Leaders Program will receive an insider’s perspective on Student Life at UMSL. Throughout the program, students will have an opportunity to develop their leadership abilities through workshops, activities and reflection in order to prepare them for future leadership experience at UMSL and beyond. Each mentor will be paired up with two participants with the same major. Mentors are trained by the Office of Student Life to develop leadership potential on a peer level. They operate as a campus and community resource for their mentees as well as being an observable example of the qualities, character and actions of a student leader.
