Two book authors, one reading
The Graduate Writers Association at the University of Missouri–St. Louis is hosting the literary version of a double feature. Katherine Riegel and Ira Sukrungruang will provide the St. Louis literary community with back-to-back readings of poetry and creative nonfiction. University of Missouri–St. Louis junior guard Darian Cartharn has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. Cartharn averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while leading the UMSL Tritons to a pair of wins last week.

Jazz orchestra to pay tribute to Count Basie
The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra will pay tribute to one of the leading bands of the swing era, the Count Basie Orchestra, with a concert at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. “A Night of Count Basie” will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Blanch M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

The honors college will release issue 13 of its annual literary publication “Bellerive” and kickoff the submissions collection for issue 14, which will be produced during the fall semester.
UMSL honors top high school STEM students
Some of the best and brightest high school juniors from around the St. Louis area were honored last week by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. They were on hand for the dedication of “UMSL in Glass,” a glass-block sculpture conceived by students in the Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies for the UMSL Jubilee.

The idea grew from a class last spring in advertising techniques taught by Kristy Tucciarone, associate teaching professor of media studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. At the time, the university was planning the yearlong Jubilee celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2013.

St. Louis Public Radio to broadcast St. Louis mayoral primary forum live from UMSL at Grand Center
St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU will air a special live broadcast of “St. Louis on the Air” Feb. 11 from UMSL at Grand Center, 3651 Olive St. in St. Louis. The one-hour broadcast of the “St. Louis Mayoral Primary Forum” will begin at 11 a.m. and will include the three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for St. Louis mayor — incumbent Mayor Francis Slay, Aldermanic President Lewis Reed and former St. Louis Alderman Jimmie Matthews. “St. Louis on the Air” host Don Marsh will serve as the forum’s moderator.

UMSL students take action to promote tobacco-free campus
The University of Missouri–St. Louis fired up the second week of its UMSL Seriously Tobacco-Free campaign on Monday, and administrators weren’t the only ones taking the university’s tobacco-free policy seriously. Volunteer students handed out fliers with tobacco facts, cessation resource information and copies of the university policy during high traffic hours in the Quadrangle on North Campus.

The win came during UMSL’s annual Pack the Stands event at Chuck Smith Court. The women’s team lost to Quincy 47-42.
