2012 women’s soccer preview

There is no doubt about it. The 2012 University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team is young. With just two seniors on the roster, the majority of the team is composed of underclassmen, including 11 freshmen.

The 2012 edition of the University of Missouri St. Louis men’s soccer team will include some old faces and plenty of new ones as well. Head coach Dan King, who enters his 12th season, returns 17 players from last year’s 8-5-4 team, including five starters. Additionally, he welcomes 11 newcomers, including seven true freshmen.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team will welcome five newcomers to a squad that returns seven players from last year’s team. The UMSL Tritons are coming off a 19-9 record in 2011, including a 13-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference mark, and are looking for another strong season.

Students participate at the opening reception of “Workbook” in the Visio Gallery by filling in a paint by numbers mural of Georges Seurat’s “Bathers at Asnieres.” The exhibit is an interactive live art show with the walls of the gallery covered with workbook activities. Gallery Visio is a student-run gallery at UMSL. It’s located in 170 Millennium Student Center at UMSL’s North Campus. Regular hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Golf tournament to raise funds for Athletics

The Department of Athletics at the University of Missouri–St. Louis comprises 11 successful sports programs. And to help ensure the programs continue to flourish, the department will hold its third annual Tritons Golf Tournament Sept. 21 at Norwood Hills Country Club in Jennings, Mo. The fun-filled day of golf and socializing with friends and alumni will support UMSL athletics with all proceeds going toward the department’s 11 sports programs.

St. Louis artists gain exposure in Gallery 210 exhibition

An exhibition that’s become one of Gallery 210’s most anticipated shows is back. “Exposure 15” is the latest in a series of group exhibitions designed to feature artists who live and work in the St. Louis metropolitan area. This year, Gallery 210 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will present the work of Heather Corley, Deborah Douglas and Gina Alvarez, who was named Best Local Artist by the Riverfront Times in 2009.

Students from Rikkyo University in Tokyo found the large tables in the St. Louis Mercantile Library a perfect place to work on their homework. The undergraduate students, all business majors, are participants in a monthlong program at UMSL. They attend classes, visit the region’s cultural and entertainment attractions, and spend a weekend with a host family to familiarize and learn about American customs.

A crew makes progress on July 27 on the Chancellor Marguerite Ross Barnett Memorial Plaza. It will commemorate the lasting accomplishments of Barnett (1942-1992), who led the university from 1986 to 1990. The plaza is scheduled to open during the fall semester and is adjacent to Express Scripts Hall and the Social Sciences & Business Building Tower on the university’s North Campus.
