University City, Mo., resident Martin Bergmann (pictured) was by no means new to academia when he came to the University of Missouri–St. Louis in 2001. A career physician, Bergmann earned his BS and MD from Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 1945. After a stint in the Air Force, Bergmann held a variety of positions in St. Louis-area hospitals culminating in his serving as a senior surgeon of cardiothoracic surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital from 1969 to 1998. A little bit older than the typical UMSL student, he will be 91 this May.

The college is collaborating with Ira DeWitt, president and founder of Notifi Records; the UMSL Department of Music; and the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, to offer this certificate program that provides participants with the necessary technical skills needed for the production of high-quality sound recordings.

Derrick Langeneckert didn’t want to wake up 50 years from now and wonder, “What if?” So, he’s following his dream to open up a brewery. According to his plans, his payoff will open in the spring – Alpha Brewing Company. The new craft brewery will be located at 1409 Washington Ave. in St. Louis, across the street from the City Museum.

Men’s golfer named GLVC best for October
University of Missouri–St. Louis junior Joe Atkisson competed in three events in October, averaging 74.4 over eight rounds en route to being named the Great Lake Valley Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Month. Atkisson was selected by a vote from the league’s men’s golf coaches. He’s only the second ever UMSL Tritons men’s golfer to earn the distinction.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s soccer team wrapped a successful season Sunday, ending with a last-minute defeat in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship game. Two days earlier, the GLVC honored two UMSL Tritons players for their contributions over the course of the season. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Ream and sophomore back Tony Auck were named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Third Team.

The Division of Continuing Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis has a new name: School of Professional & Continuing Studies. “It was determined that the ‘School of Professional & Continuing Studies’ would more accurately reflect the nature of our work, the constituents with whom we work, and better align us with our peers and our related professional organizations,” said Wm. Thomas Walker, dean of PCS.
‘House’ director looks to adapt UMSL scholar’s novel for film
Los Angeles-based director and writer Julian Higgins has emerged as a young talent within the film industry. He’s received wide acclaim for his short film “Thief” and his turn directing an episode of the popular television show “House” in its final season. He’s next looking to make his feature-film directorial debut with a possible adaptation of the novel “The Inverted Forest” by John Dalton, director of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Counseling scholar receives GLBT Educator of the Year Award

Gateway for Greatness Campaign boosts access, excellence at UMSL
The Gateway for Greatness Campaign at the University of Missouri–St. Louis concluded this summer after surpassing an initial $100 million fundraising goal and a subsequent $150 million goal. The university raised more than $154 million through gifts by 57,900 donors. Of those contributors to the campaign, 257 gave more than $100,000, and 31 gave more than $1 million.
MIMH celebrates 5 decades of service
The Missouri Institute of Mental Health marked 50 years of service to the community with a public celebration on Oct. 1. MIMH became a unit of the University of Missouri–St. Louis in 2010 after being operated by the University of Missouri–Columbia for many years. The institute offers research, evaluation, policy and training expertise to organizations seeking to improve the behavioral health services they provide to patients.
