Barczewski named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week

Junior back Brooke Barczewski of the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office. Quincy senior forward Jaclyn Mastroianni was tabbed as the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and St. Louis’ own Improv Shop have teamed up again this season to present three evenings of comedy. The first performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Touhill.

UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The University of Missouri–St. Louis went 2-0 on the weekend, posting a pair of shutout victories in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The UMSL Tritons defeated Saint Joseph’s 2-0 on Friday night with goals from Jaylon Griffith and Jessica Mincher before picking up a 1-0 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday behind the game-winner from Hannah Kaloupek. The Tritons (4-2, 2-2 GLVC) return to the road this weekend, traveling to Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and to Lewis on Sunday.

In the 2010 documentary “Catfish,” Nev Schulman famously tracked down the online paramour who had duped him into a cyber relationship. The film spawned an MTV reality series and solidified the term “catfish” in the American lexicon as a person who pretends to be someone they’re not, using social media to create a false identity, particularly to pursue deceitful online romances.

St. Louis Jazz Orchestra to pay tribute to Maynard Ferguson

The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra, led by Jim Widner, director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will showcase the music of Maynard Ferguson and feature the artistry of St. Louis’ own Maynard “disciple” Jim Manley. “St. Louis Jazz Orchestra: A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson” will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a pair of losses last weekend. The UMSL Tritons suffered a 1-0 defeat at Quincy on Friday as the host Hawks scored the game-winner in the final three minutes. UMSL then hosted Truman State on Sunday in the home opener, falling victim to the Bulldogs, 2-0.The Tritons close out their current three-game homestand this weekend, hosting Saint Joseph’s on Friday and Indianapolis on Sunday.

UMSL student Sidney Allen named GLVC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Sophomore midfielder Sidney Allen of the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office. Wisconsin-Parkside freshman goalkeeper Mallory Geurts was tabbed as the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week. The 2013 season marks the first year GLVC men’s and women’s soccer has honored an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis opened its schedule with a pair of victories, beginning the season at 2-0 for the first time since 2001. The UMSL Tritons competed in the Embassy Suites Invitational, last weekend, hosted by Lindenwood. UMSL defeated Emporia State, 2-0, in the opener on Friday, before topping the host team on Sunday, 2-1. The Tritons travel to Quincy on Friday for the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener before hosting Truman State on Sunday in their home opener.
