Wind Ensemble to start season with Touhill performance
The University Wind Ensemble will perform its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Wednesday night’s presidential debate might have taken place in Denver, but the University of Missouri–St. Louis at Grand Center took center stage for NPR listeners. The new home of St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU was the setting for a live broadcast of “Talk of the Nation.”
Gateway for Greatness Campaign boosts access, excellence at UMSL
The Gateway for Greatness Campaign at the University of Missouri–St. Louis concluded this summer after surpassing an initial $100 million fundraising goal and a subsequent $150 million goal. The university raised more than $154 million through gifts by 57,900 donors. Of those contributors to the campaign, 257 gave more than $100,000, and 31 gave more than $1 million.

Eye on UMSL: Lee Medal for Philanthropy
The University of Missouri–St. Louis held its annual Founders Dinner on Oct. 2 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton, Mo. The event attracted 800 alumni and friends who celebrated the successful completion of the Gateway for Greatness Campaign, the university’s first comprehensive capital campaign. More than $154 million in private funding was raised over seven years to support scholarships, facilities, programs and faculty positions.
MIMH celebrates 5 decades of service
The Missouri Institute of Mental Health marked 50 years of service to the community with a public celebration on Oct. 1. MIMH became a unit of the University of Missouri–St. Louis in 2010 after being operated by the University of Missouri–Columbia for many years. The institute offers research, evaluation, policy and training expertise to organizations seeking to improve the behavioral health services they provide to patients.

Court of Appeals to hear cases for special docket at UMSL
The University of Missouri–St. Louis community and interested citizens will have a rare opportunity to take in a Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, session outside of downtown St. Louis. The court will hear cases for a special docket between 10 and 11 a.m. Oct. 4 in the Summit Conference Room at the J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center at UMSL.

2 tenants join ITE incubator
The University of Missouri–St. Louis incubator for startup companies continues to grow, with the addition of two new tenants. Retectix and Onshore Outsourcing recently moved into UMSL’s Innovative Technology Enterprises, which brings the ITE tenant count to eight.
Goalkeeper’s shutout streak leads to GLVC honors
Patrick Ream, a senior goalkeeper for the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s soccer team, held opponents scoreless over 188 minutes and 42 seconds of play last week. The two shutouts also ran his streak to four consecutive games and led to him being named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. He is only the second men’s soccer player to earn the distinction.

Each year, the Graduate Writers Association at the University of Missouri–St. Louis works to help grow the St. Louis literary scene through readings by emerging poets and writers. The next GWA reading will feature Seth Fried, author of the acclaimed short story collection “The Great Frustration.”
‘New Dance Horizons’ to kick off Dance St. Louis’ 47th season
Dance St. Louis will open its 47th season with a quartet of collaborations. The nonprofit dance presenter paired four nationally renowned choreographers with St. Louis-area dance companies to create clever and moving world premiere performances.
Alumna to present photography, live art exhibit at Gallery Visio
The next Gallery Visio exhibit at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will be a combination of vivid and dramatic portrait photographs and live art elements. “Synesthesia” is the brainchild of UMSL alumna Rebecca Haas, BFA 2010.
Pianist to bring tango sound to Touhill stage
Pianist Polly Ferman has performed Latin American music on some of the most prestigious stages in the world, including New York’s Carnegie Hall. At 8 p.m. Oct. 6 she will bring her international repertoire to the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Doors will open at 7:10 p.m. for a pre-show discussion. Tickets are $10-$20.

Professor gets up close and personal with iconic newsman Dan Rather
For more than four decades Dan Rather was a fixture at CBS. For 24 of those years he helmed the “CBS Evening News” anchor desk before retiring in 2005. But that didn’t spell the end of his broadcasting career. Seven years later, he’s still as busy as ever. He’s the managing editor and anchor of the news magazine program “Dan Rather Reports” which airs on the cable channel AXS TV.
China hub to be focus of UMSL business lecture
Could St. Louis soon be a cargo hub for China? What would this mean for the region? Tim Nowak, executive director of the World Trade Center St. Louis, will discuss “The Midwest Cargo Hub Update” at 8 a.m. Oct. 4 at World Trade Center St. Louis in Clayton, Mo.

Former Speaker of the Missouri House Steven Tilley will be among the participants debating term limits for state legislators at the inaugural Public Ethics Conference, “Term limits: Two Decades of Lessons.” The conference will be presented on Oct. 6 by the Center for Ethics in Public Life at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

A stem cell research advocate who ranked on Time magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People for 2005” will discuss the importance of protecting medical research during a talk at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

In ancient Greece, there were two opposing views about the human mind. Plato thought a person was “tabula inscripta,” born with some innate knowledge. Whereas, Aristotle subscribed to the idea of “tabula rasa,” born without any previous knowledge.

University of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Tom George delivers the State of the University Address Sept. 19 in the J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center on the university’s North Campus. More than 300 students, faculty, staff and alumni attended the annual event. The chancellor touted important campus news, recognized the work of faculty and staff and discussed university goals, including ongoing efforts to increase student enrollment.
Improv company channels bard through comedy
No two productions by The Improvised Shakespeare Company are exactly alike. For example, they performed their on-the-spot original production of “The Cupboard of Lost Dreams; or, the Taming of Lady Macbeth” on a spring swing through Des Moines, Iowa. The audience suggested the faux production that night. And the company cobbled together on the fly its hilarious improvisational take on fake Shakespeare.

2012-13 women’s tennis preview
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule Friday with the weekendlong Lynn Imergoot Invitational, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. Under the direction of 11th year head coach Rick Gyllenborg, the UMSL Tritons returned three players from last year’s squad, which finished with a 9-7 overall record.

2012-13 women’s golf preview
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golf team has concluded each of the last three seasons in the NCAA East Regional, making the program one of the school’s most decorated in recent years. The UMSL Tritons began their trek toward a fourth straight NCAA tournament berth earlier this week with a ninth-place finish at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Carson-Newman College in Sevleirville, Tenn.

Express Scripts helps energize campus
Thanks to Express Scripts, the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ carbon footprint just got smaller. With funding from the company, UMSL has completed its first solar panel installation to generate electricity. The roof of UMSL’s Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center, just across the street from Express Scripts headquarters, features a 25-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electricity.

2012-13 men’s golf preview
The 2012 University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s golf season teed off on Sept. 9 with a win over Maryville University (Town and Country, Mo.) to retain the Arch Cup. UMSL returned four players from last year’s squad and will once again be under the direction Troy Halterman, in his fourth year as the program’s head coach.
