An ambitious production that’s taken years of planning will finally get its unveiling later this month at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Eye on UMSL: Bonfire
A group of University of Missouri–St. Louis students, faculty and staff warm up Feb. 6 at a bonfire outside the Millennium Student Center. They were on hand for the dedication of “UMSL in Glass,” a glass-block sculpture conceived by students in the Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies for the UMSL Jubilee.

The idea grew from a class last spring in advertising techniques taught by Kristy Tucciarone, associate teaching professor of media studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. At the time, the university was planning the yearlong Jubilee celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2013.

St. Louis Public Radio to broadcast St. Louis mayoral primary forum live from UMSL at Grand Center
St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU will air a special live broadcast of “St. Louis on the Air” Feb. 11 from UMSL at Grand Center, 3651 Olive St. in St. Louis. The one-hour broadcast of the “St. Louis Mayoral Primary Forum” will begin at 11 a.m. and will include the three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for St. Louis mayor — incumbent Mayor Francis Slay, Aldermanic President Lewis Reed and former St. Louis Alderman Jimmie Matthews. “St. Louis on the Air” host Don Marsh will serve as the forum’s moderator.
UMSL’s family, friends gather to celebrate 50 years together
It was a family affair. They arrived in twos and threes. Others had more than four in their groups. And they all came to celebrate an institution that had made a difference in their lives.

UMSL students take action to promote tobacco-free campus
The University of Missouri–St. Louis fired up the second week of its UMSL Seriously Tobacco-Free campaign on Monday, and administrators weren’t the only ones taking the university’s tobacco-free policy seriously. Volunteer students handed out fliers with tobacco facts, cessation resource information and copies of the university policy during high traffic hours in the Quadrangle on North Campus.

The work of nationally noted sculptor and metalsmith John Medwedeff will be the focus of the next exhibit at the University of Missouri–St. Louis’s Gallery 210.
Eye on UMSL: Pack the Stands
Darian Cartharn, a junior guard for the UMSL Tritons, drives to the basket for 2 of the 12 points he scored Jan. 31 in a 69-55 Tritons victory over the Hawks of Quincy (Ill.) University. The win came during UMSL’s annual Pack the Stands event at Chuck Smith Court. The women’s team lost to Quincy 47-42.

UMSL photo exhibit focuses on Angel Baked Cookies
Teenagers employed by north St. Louis-based bakery Angel Baked Cookies are both the subjects and photographers for a new University of Missouri–St. Louis exhibit. The set of photos captures the creativity, camaraderie and community permeating the teen collective’s cookie-making process. The exhibit is the latest in the Public Policy Research Center Photography Project series.
Moulin Rouge-inspired ballet to be staged at Touhill
The Moulin Rouge has been the inspiration for books, paintings, musicals, films – and now, ballet. Dance St. Louis will bring Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the oldest continuously running ballet company in North America, to St. Louis for the first time to perform “Moulin Rouge – The Ballet” at 8 p.m. Jan. 25 and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Erin Schulte believes the secret to a successful learning environment is the right mix of academic, emotional and physical stimulation. Schulte, an educational psychology doctoral student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, is a guidance counselor at Parkway North High School in west St. Louis County.

‘Pipeline to Local Office’ encourages women candidates, volunteers

Coming off its best season since 2004, the University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team is hoping for an encore in 2013. They’re being picked to do just that, according to the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason Poll that ranked the UMSL Tritons No. 30 nationally.
Normandy mayor recognized for service to UMSL
Patrick Green, mayor of Normandy, Mo., has worked together with the University of Missouri–St. Louis on a number of community improvement projects. For his efforts, he was recognized with the Presidential Citation Award for Outstanding Service to UMSL on Nov. 30 at the Alliance Awards Dinner in Columbia, Mo.
