With just a week to spare, registration numbers for the spring 2013 UMSL Day hovered at about 50 percent of what they were from the year prior. Ron Gossen, senior associate vice chancellor and chief marketing officer at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, knew this because he tracked the metrics daily. And he knew he had to do something to jolt the registration numbers.

The rising high school senior envisions herself someday working in computer securities for a corporation or medical organization. When a teacher told her about Xtreme IT!, a summer academy offered by the University of Missouri–St. Louis, she was ready to sign up.

The AASCU is made up of more than 400 state-supported colleges and universities across the nation offering degree programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Bob Sundvold will be filling big shoes when he begins this fall as head coach of the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team. He will replace Steve Tappmeyer who during his tenure led the UMSL Tritons to the team’s most consecutive winning seasons (three) since the first four years of the program, 1966-1970. But Sundvold is up to the task.

Ferguson (Mo.) Brewing Company, the closest brewery to the University of Missouri–St. Louis, wanted to do something special to celebrate UMSL’s 50th anniversary. That led to Jubilee Brew, an Irish-style red ale made to honor a half century of education and excellence at the university. It also led to learning opportunities at UMSL.

Eye on UMSL: Music in motion

Kate Williamson, a K-6 music specialist and Orff Schulwerk instructor from Minnesota, leads a group of music teachers through a music and movement education class during an Orff Schulwerk Certification workshop June 19 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The Department of Music at UMSL sponsored the workshop, which attracted nearly 50 teachers from across the region. This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speech and movement.

Hannah Perryman named Third Team All-American by NFCA and Daktronics, Inc.

Freshman pitcher Hannah Perryman of the University of Missouri–St. Louis softball team has been named a 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Softball All-American. Perryman was selected to the third team and is just the fourth player in program history to be named a NCAA Division II All-American. She was also named a Third Team All-American by Daktronics, Inc.

The Center for Character and Citizenship in the College of Education at UMSL held its annual Summer Institute in Character Education June 3-7. More than 30 educators from various states, including four from Colegio Los Nogales in Bogota, Colombia, attended the weeklong character education training run by Marvin Berkowitz, the Sanford N. McDonnell Endowed Professor of Education at UMSL. At the end of each day, participants are paired up and ask to give daily reflections on what they learned.

A letter from St. Louis Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr. that solicited for money to help fund his daughter’s college education has led to media coverage by multiple St. Louis-area news outlets. KMOV (Channel 4) reported that the letter came close to blurring the line between Bosley’s public and private life, but was not illegal. The news station asked Wally Siewert, director of the Center for Ethics in Public Life at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, to weigh in.
