Feast Magazine spotlighted Dohmo, a new venture from Jason Jan, an UMSL business alum. Dohmo will offer Olivette residents a new place for ice cream, taiyaki and bubble tea. Each customizable frozen treat gets blended to order utilizing a slow freeze machine – the first of its kind in the St. Louis area – so that guests can build their own treats from a list of more than 40 different mix-in options. Jan and his wife, Yen Luu, also own Nami Ramen and previously founded the FroYo chain, which they sold in 2014.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy featured the James S. McDonnell Foundation’s $8 million grant to UMSL to help launch the university’s new School of Engineering. The funding will provide crucial financial support for new high-caliber faculty to teach and to engage with St. Louis industry, in addition to support staff and student success resources. The grant funds immediate and endowed scholarships that will support students over the school’s first five years and for decades into the future, training students for in-demand careers with high earning potential.

Susan Brownell, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, joined the NBC Today Show, as well as KCBS, to discuss the diplomatic history of giant pandas after a pair of them made their highly-anticipated American debut at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The first giant pandas made their way to the U.S. in 1972 after President Nixon’s historic visit to China. “I think the panda reflected a softer, cuddlier China that Americans could have a relationship with, and that was a complete reversal of the way people had come to think about China in the midst of the Cold War,” Brownell said.
