Humanities Festival to explore effects of money
The Center for the Humanities at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will host a literary reading and discussion by novelist Martha McPhee and book critic Heller McAlpin at 10 a.m. on April 5 at UMSL’s J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center. The event is part of the 2013 Greater St. Louis Humanities Festival that will take place at venues throughout the St. Louis area. This year’s festival theme is “Money, Money! Need, Greed, and Generosity.”

Two book authors, one reading
The Graduate Writers Association at the University of Missouri–St. Louis is hosting the literary version of a double feature. Katherine Riegel and Ira Sukrungruang will provide the St. Louis literary community with back-to-back readings of poetry and creative nonfiction. University of Missouri–St. Louis junior guard Darian Cartharn has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. Jazz orchestra to pay tribute to Count Basie
The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra will pay tribute to one of the leading bands of the swing era, the Count Basie Orchestra, with a concert at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. “A Night of Count Basie” will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Blanch M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

The Pierre Laclede Honors College at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will throw a party to mark two occasions this Friday (Feb. 22). The honors college will release issue 13 of its annual literary publication “Bellerive” and kickoff the submissions collection for issue 14, which will be produced during the fall semester.
UMSL honors top high school STEM students
Some of the best and brightest high school juniors from around the St. Louis area were honored last week by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
