Pianist to bring tango sound to Touhill stage
Pianist Polly Ferman has performed Latin American music on some of the most prestigious stages in the world, including New York’s Carnegie Hall. At 8 p.m. Oct. 6 she will bring her international repertoire to the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Doors will open at 7:10 p.m. for a pre-show discussion. Tickets are $10-$20.

Professor gets up close and personal with iconic newsman Dan Rather
For more than four decades Dan Rather was a fixture at CBS. For 24 of those years he helmed the “CBS Evening News” anchor desk before retiring in 2005. But that didn’t spell the end of his broadcasting career. Seven years later, he’s still as busy as ever. He’s the managing editor and anchor of the news magazine program “Dan Rather Reports” which airs on the cable channel AXS TV.
China hub to be focus of UMSL business lecture
Could St. Louis soon be a cargo hub for China? What would this mean for the region? Tim Nowak, executive director of the World Trade Center St. Louis, will discuss “The Midwest Cargo Hub Update” at 8 a.m. Oct. 4 at World Trade Center St. Louis in Clayton, Mo.

University of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Tom George delivers the State of the University Address Sept. 19 in the J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center on the university’s North Campus. More than 300 students, faculty, staff and alumni attended the annual event. The chancellor touted important campus news, recognized the work of faculty and staff and discussed university goals, including ongoing efforts to increase student enrollment.
Improv company channels bard through comedy
No two productions by The Improvised Shakespeare Company are exactly alike. For example, they performed their on-the-spot original production of “The Cupboard of Lost Dreams; or, the Taming of Lady Macbeth” on a spring swing through Des Moines, Iowa. The audience suggested the faux production that night. And the company cobbled together on the fly its hilarious improvisational take on fake Shakespeare.

2012-13 women’s golf preview
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golf team has concluded each of the last three seasons in the NCAA East Regional, making the program one of the school’s most decorated in recent years. The UMSL Tritons began their trek toward a fourth straight NCAA tournament berth earlier this week with a ninth-place finish at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Carson-Newman College in Sevleirville, Tenn.

Express Scripts helps energize campus
Thanks to Express Scripts, the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ carbon footprint just got smaller. With funding from the company, UMSL has completed its first solar panel installation to generate electricity. The roof of UMSL’s Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center, just across the street from Express Scripts headquarters, features a 25-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electricity.

Walter Klingenbeck was 19 years old when he was executed by the Nazis. His crime was painting the V for Victory sign of the Allies on street signs and mailboxes.
