‘Catfish’ on campus: Documentary star Nev Schulman to speak at UMSL

In the 2010 documentary “Catfish,” Nev Schulman famously tracked down the online paramour who had duped him into a cyber relationship. The film spawned an MTV reality series and solidified the term “catfish” in the American lexicon as a person who pretends to be someone they’re not, using social media to create a false identity, particularly to pursue deceitful online romances.

St. Louis Jazz Orchestra to pay tribute to Maynard Ferguson

The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra, led by Jim Widner, director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will showcase the music of Maynard Ferguson and feature the artistry of St. Louis’ own Maynard “disciple” Jim Manley. “St. Louis Jazz Orchestra: A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson” will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

Jane Birdsall-Lander’s repurposed wooden wall sculptures have the appearance of primitive objects. Jerry Monteith’s tiny and bizarre bug-like attractors are inspired by fly-fishing lures. Melody Evans’ flowing ceramic pieces are built upon a personal visual language, including the interaction between the human body and the environment.

Eye on UMSL: Music in motion

Kate Williamson, a K-6 music specialist and Orff Schulwerk instructor from Minnesota, leads a group of music teachers through a music and movement education class during an Orff Schulwerk Certification workshop June 19 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The Department of Music at UMSL sponsored the workshop, which attracted nearly 50 teachers from across the region. This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speech and movement.

What started out as just an idea of Dance St. Louis Artistic and Executive Director Michael Uthoff has exploded into one of the hottest dance festivals in the country. Thirty professional dance companies, three nights, $15 tickets – the Memorial Day Weekend phenomenon, Spring to Dance Festival, returns for its sixth year at the University of Missouri–St. Louis with a smorgasbord of dance styles, including everything from cutting-edge contemporary dance and tap to classical ballet, modern and more.

Creative writers to give one last reading as students

A day before they graduate from the University of Missouri–St. Louis with an MFA in creative writing, nine students will read their original works. The semiannual MFA Graduate Reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. May 17 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL. The reading is free and open to the public.

UMSL chancellor looks back, ahead in community report

The University of Missouri–St. Louis looks pretty good from where UMSL Chancellor Tom George stands. Fifty years ago, the university’s founders crammed 672 students and 32 faculty members into what was the clubhouse of the former Bellerive Country Club. Today, UMSL has nearly 17,000 students, more than 85,000 alumni and an outstanding reputation regionally and nationally. The university is also celebrating its Jubilee with events throughout 2013.

PPRC photo exhibit focuses on Normandy School District

Past and present students of the Normandy (Mo.) School District are both the subjects and photographers for a new University of Missouri–St. Louis exhibit. Participants included Normandy High School alumni and current students at schools in the Normandy district. Their photos resulted in an exhibit that is the latest in the Public Policy Research Center Photography Project series.
