In May, Teresa Bandrowsky earned her PhD in chemistry from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. In August, she begins her new job as a research and development chemist at Jost Chemical Company.

UMSL educator gaining insight, culture in Botswana
As a counseling educator, Angela Coker has spent her career focusing on the issues that plague African American women in the United States. But this year, she has the opportunity to examine those same issues from the viewpoint of African women. Coker, assistant professor of counseling and family therapy at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, is in the mist of an eight-month trip to Gaborone, Botswana, to collect data for her research study titled “Counseling Across Cultures.” The study focuses on how culture impacts the practice of counseling in southern Africa. While there she is serving as a visiting scholar at the University of Botswana.

Rochelle Henderson, UMSL alumna and director of health services research at Express Scripts, explains the research area in the Express Scripts Technology and Innovation Center in Berkeley, Mo. The building, located just north of UMSL, houses the company’s pharmacy and distribution center. Henderson, who earned a doctoral degree in political science from UMSL in 2010, led a tour of the facility July 26, which was attended by several members of the UMSL community. Sundvold talks plans to build on UMSL men’s basketball success
Bob Sundvold will be filling big shoes when he begins this fall as head coach of the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team. He will replace Steve Tappmeyer who during his tenure led the UMSL Tritons to the team’s most consecutive winning seasons (three) since the first four years of the program, 1966-1970. But Sundvold is up to the task.

Ferguson (Mo.) Brewing Company, the closest brewery to the University of Missouri–St. Louis, wanted to do something special to celebrate UMSL’s 50th anniversary. That led to Jubilee Brew, an Irish-style red ale made to honor a half century of education and excellence at the university. It also led to learning opportunities at UMSL.

Kate Williamson, a K-6 music specialist and Orff Schulwerk instructor from Minnesota, leads a group of music teachers through a music and movement education class during an Orff Schulwerk Certification workshop June 19 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The Department of Music at UMSL sponsored the workshop, which attracted nearly 50 teachers from across the region. This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speech and movement.
