The Department of Athletics at the University of Missouri–St. Louis comprises 11 successful sports programs. And to help ensure the programs continue to flourish, the department will hold its third annual Tritons Golf Tournament Sept. 21 at Norwood Hills Country Club in Jennings, Mo. The fun-filled day of golf and socializing with friends and alumni will support UMSL athletics with all proceeds going toward the department’s 11 sports programs.
When it comes to answering the question “What did you do on your summer vacation?”, Jessie Chandler might have the best answer. While millions across the world watched the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London from the comfort of their couches, Chandler, the assistant director of athletics-compliance at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, was experiencing the spectacle firsthand.
Junior centerfielder Lucas Matecki of the University of Missouri–St. Louis is one of the best outfield defenders in the Midwest, according to the American Baseball Coaches Association. He was selected to the ABCA Midwest Region Gold Glove Team for his near spotless play in the field.
A pair of freshmen made quite a first impression this season with the start of their college softball playing careers at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
The University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team had five players earn all-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors, including a pair of first team nods to senior starting pitcher Jeremy Butler and junior outfielder John Pilackas. Junior third baseman Trevor Nathanson, junior utility player Charlie Mohr and junior designated hitter Taylor Holman were all named to the league’s second team.
The University of Missouri–St. Louis recently honored 45 graduating seniors, led by baseball player Jeremy Butler and women’s basketball player Caitlyn Moody who were named Senior Student-Athletes of the Year. The seniors were recognized May 3 at the Third Annual Senior Student-Athlete Banquet at the Hilton St. Louis Airport hotel in Woodson Terrace, Mo.
A pair of University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball players helped the team sweep the final round of Great Lake Valley Conference baseball Player of the Week Awards. Junior second baseman Charlie Mohr was named GLVC baseball Player of the Week and senior pitcher Austin Schuler was named GLVC Pitcher of the Week.

One-third of the players selected to the 2012 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division first team wore University of Missouri–St. Louis Tritons red and gold. Freshman first baseman Brianna Butler and junior designated player Leslie Davis led the way as unanimous selections, while freshman catcher Madison Zbarashuk and senior outfielder Erin Driskell also made the team.
Last week, Trevor Nathanson extended his hitting streak eight games, reached base at a .786 clip and boasted an impressive 1.200 slugging percentage en route to being named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week.

Katie Vaughn will now oversee the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s basketball team after coming off a season as head coach of the record-setting Lincoln University (Jefferson City, Mo.) women’s basketball team. Lori Flanagan, director of athletics at UMSL, announced last week that Vaughn would be the 11th head coach in program history. Vaughn coached for three seasons at Lincoln University.
For the second straight season, University of Missouri–St. Louis sophomore Louisa Werner was named a member of the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s tennis team.

Senior Jeremy Butler struck out 14 batters across 16 innings of pitching to help the University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team secure two wins last week. And during the same week sophomore Louisa Werner went undefeated in eight singles and doubles matches for the UMSL women’s tennis team.
Senior guard Troy Long of the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team and head coach Steve Tappmeyer have been honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Long earned Second Team All-Midwest Region honors, while Tappmeyer was recognized as Midwest District Co-Coach of the Year.
The UMSL men’s golf team held its Golf Marathon last Monday at the Family Golf Center. Each team member and coach played 100 holes in an effort to raise money for the program. A pair of UMSL Tritons players also recorded hole-in-ones during the event, including freshman Cullen Pearce on his third hole of the day and junior Chase Smith on his seventh hole of the day.
Coming off a stellar week of singles and doubles play, University of Missouri–St. Louis sophomore Louisa Werner was named the Great Lakes Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week last week. Werner guided the UMSL Tritons at the Principia Tournament March 2-3 in Elsah, Ill., by going 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles. Werner dropped just seven games throughout the entire tournament.
