Femi John works as a part-time nurse and is pursuing his MBA at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He’s also in the mist of a revival of his basketball career. The former McCluer North High School (Florissant, Mo.) standout and Saint Louis University recruit is now a guard on the UMSL Tritons after battling injuries for several years.

St. Louis Jazz Orchestra to pay tribute to Maynard Ferguson

The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra, led by Jim Widner, director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will showcase the music of Maynard Ferguson and feature the artistry of St. Louis’ own Maynard “disciple” Jim Manley. “St. Louis Jazz Orchestra: A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson” will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

UMSL resident artists Arianna String Quartet announce 2013-14 repertoire

The acclaimed St. Louis-based Arianna String Quartet, resident artists at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, has announced its 2013-14 St. Louis concert series. The quartet will perform four concerts – “Out of Africa” featuring Alex Klein, oboe; “An Evening with Johannes Brahms” with pianist Johannes Brahms, “A Night at the Opera” with special guest soprano Stella Markou and “High Five” – in the E. Ferguson (Mo.) Brewing Company, the closest brewery to the University of Missouri–St. Louis, wanted to do something special to celebrate UMSL’s 50th anniversary. That led to Jubilee Brew, an Irish-style red ale made to honor a half century of education and excellence at the university. It also led to learning opportunities at UMSL.

John Harner leads his charges through a trumpet master class on the second day of the weeklong UMSL Jazz Camp, which is now part of the Jim Widner Big Band Jazz Camp series. The musicians added an extra level of improvisation that day, moving class up to the naturally illuminated J.C. Penney Building/Conference Center lobby due to a power outage that hit North Campus.

The College of Fine Arts and Communication at the University of Missouri–St. Louis announces Acappellooza Summer Camp, an a cappella music camp for students in grades 9–12. For four days, from July 16–19 students will be immersed in singing led by some of the world’s most prominent names in a cappella music, including members of the internationally famous Ambassadors of Harmony and Jim Henry, director of choral studies at UMSL.

While most University of Missouri–St. Louis students spent spring break on icy cold slopes or hot sandy beaches, twenty members of the Catholic Newman Center at UMSL felt called to do otherwise. Nineteen students and Rachelle Simon, the CNC campus minister, chose to spend their break completing community service on Bethlehem Farm.

Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival celebrates 10 years

Over the last ten years, the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival has grown to be one of the most significant jazz festivals in the Midwest. Produced by the University of Missouri–St. Louis, the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center and Jazz St. Louis, the 2013 festival will run April 18-20 and feature Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, Doc Severinsen and His Big Band and Anat Cohen and Matt Wilson.

The College of Fine Arts & Communication at the University of Missouri–St. Louis announced their new program for students to earn a Certificate in Audio Recording. The college is collaborating with Ira DeWitt, president and founder of Notifi Records; the UMSL Department of Music; and the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, to offer this certificate program that provides participants with the necessary technical skills needed for the production of high-quality sound recordings.

Cartharn named GLVC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

University of Missouri–St. Louis junior guard Darian Cartharn has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. Cartharn averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while leading the UMSL Tritons to a pair of wins last week.
